Everyone has a first estate sale. And almost everyone makes the same mistakes. Here's your crash course so you can skip the awkward learning curve and start finding great deals immediately.

What IS an Estate Sale?

An estate sale is when the contents of a home are sold — usually because the homeowner has passed away, is downsizing, or is relocating. Unlike garage sales, estate sales typically include everything in the house: furniture, kitchenware, clothing, collectibles, tools, and personal items.

What to Expect When You Walk In

There might be a line. Popular sales draw crowds, especially on opening day. Arrive 15-30 minutes early if you want to be among the first inside.

You'll sign in. Most estate sales ask you to sign a guest book or check in at the door. This is normal.

Everything is for sale. If it's in the house, it's probably for sale (unless specifically marked "not for sale"). Don't be afraid to ask about items that aren't tagged.

Prices are usually on stickers. Look for small price stickers on items. If something isn't priced, ask a staff member.

What NOT to Do

Don't lowball on day one. Sellers expect their asking prices on opening day. Save negotiations for day two or three.

Don't touch fragile items without asking. If you want to examine something delicate, ask for help.

Don't hide items. Some buyers try to hide items around the house to come back for later. This is considered bad form and many estate sale companies will re-display hidden items.

Don't bring large bags or backpacks. Some sales prohibit them to prevent theft. Bring a small wallet or crossbody bag instead.
